Ted Haggard had an interview with Larry King talking about his sexual preferences. and it made me ill... but not for the reasons you might assume. I don't care what his preference is as long as whatever he does, he does with a consenting adult. same for anyone else. I don't care if you're straight, gay, or bi. as far as I'm concerned it doesn't change who you are... if you're an asshole, you'll still be an asshole no matter your sexual orientation.
but what irritated the living FUCK out of me was his hypocrisy. the man used to be pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, an extremely conservative Christian group who are generally (I can't speak for every member of their church and wouldn't presume to do so) opposed to homosexuality and find it immoral. Colorado Springs itself is (again, generally) an extremely right-wing christian conservative community. in 1991 the community spearheaded a campaign to pass Amendment 2 which made it legal to discriminate against people on the basis of their sexual orientation.
so now, Haggard, a previous golden boy of this community, church and environment is on Larry King talking about how his sexuality is "in process" i.e. - he's got some orientation confusion going on. ok, fine. it happens. society tells people all their lives that they have to be one orientation but their heart, mind and soul are telling them something else. he's got the right to be confused like anyone else.
but it KILLS me that he's now asking for acceptance and patience and understanding during his "process." after all the intolerance and hatred he and his organization perpetuated. THIS is why I don't understand and can't support most organized religions; the organizations which have completely forgotten Christ was about love and tolerance and acceptance; the organizations that spit dogma in the faces of anyone different from themselves until they need to be understood.
and before you tell me to "turn the other cheek" and feel bad for the man, I already do. it can't be an easy thing for him to be going through especially on such a public scale. but for me, I'd find it a little easier if he could only admit to his previous arrogance and hubris, if he would acknowledge that he is being treated the same way he used to treat others...
hello, Ted. meet Karma

it seems possible I'm going to start posting here.... just little things now and again - things that amuse or puzzle or upset or confuse or delight me. but I thought I'd give anyone who'd added me a fair chance to remove me if they want so as not to clutter friends pages. I won't be offended if you do. I probably won't use cuts. I don't expect comments. I'm a horrible LJ "friend." this will just be for me to have a little place to put things...
